BAPTISM
John the Baptist was baptizing the Jews to prepare them for the Messiah. John's baptism was for Jews only, who were already recognized as typically cleansed as a nation by their Atonement day sin-offerings. After Christ died, a new and living way was opened up, not only to the Jew, but also to Gentiles. This was the baptism into Christ's death. "Know ye not that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection." Romans 6:3-5; Hebrews 10:20
Let it be noticed in these three verses that the Apostle makes no reference to water baptism. Water baptism is merely a symbol, or picture of the real baptism — the baptism of full, heart consecration to God. In the symbol, the one who has dedicated his or her life to God in Christ is lowered backward into the water, becoming completely helpless, as if dead. The individual is then raised up out of the water, as if by resurrection to a new life. This is the baptism of the New Creation, whether Jew or Gentile, bond or free, rich or poor, male or female, and, no matter what race — we are all one in Christ if we have been baptized into Christ's death. 1 Corinthians 12:13
